Computer Basics

by Linda D. Yelverton

Computers have become so important in our everyday lives that we no longer think about the fact that they used to be fairly simple. We used to think computers were just a piece of equipment, with some programs installed and nothing more. Now we know better, and it’s our computers that can be just as important as our medical devices, our tools for art and science, and even our homes. In other words, it’s almost impossible to imagine life without computers.

One important thing to understand is that while computers are very simple, they are not easy to use. Sure, you could run a car, but to drive a car you need to have training wheels. So, too, with computers. In order to fully enjoy the wonders of computers, you need to spend some time learning how to use them.

Basic to computer use is the basics of understanding the most fundamental parts of the computer. Here are some of the most important:

Before you can use a computer, you need to know what a computer is. A computer is a device that has many parts, including the central processing unit (CPU), the memory, the display, and the input/output (I/O) devices. All of these parts are linked together with wires.

The most common form of these devices is called PCI, or the PCI Express standard. However, newer devices are referred to as USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0.

Once you know the basic pieces of a computer, it’s time to learn about how to use computers. The first step is to recognize the most basic components of a computer, and then to learn how to control them with commands from the keyboard, mouse, or pointing device.

With these basic instructions, you should be able to program the computer to do everything you want. This includes uploading data to the computer, connecting with peripherals, browsing the Internet, and all sorts of advanced applications.

There are three different types of computers. Each type uses different technologies. Here are the major types:

When learning how to use computers, you should know enough about each type of computer to know the difference between a PC and a laptop. Each type is designed for different types of applications, which may not be similar to yours.

Memory is the most important thing to keep track of when programming. Memory comes in various forms and has different capacities and speeds.

You can get RAM, flash memory, and even solid state memory, which are no longer as hard to find as memory chips. Some of the memories are soldered, while others are soldered by using a technique called thermal transfer.

You can connect your computer to many devices, such as printers, scanners, video cards, and monitors outputs. However, a PC is the most commonly found device.
